› The five basic elements in Ayurveda

The five elements in Ayurveda are

space, air, fire, water and earth. Ayurveda was already so advanced that in its model of nature it reduced matter to the existence of the smallest parts, which is confirmed by modern science. In describing these elements, however, they were limited to the five structures ascertainable by the five human sense organs. And thus they came to the Ayurveda basic elements listed above. Finally, certain qualities (gunas) were assigned to the primary elements.

Every material body in Ayurveda consists

of an individual pattern of the five elements of nature. These elements are the smallest possible parts and form different matters and substances depending on the structural composition.

According to Ayurveda, organs and tissues also consist

of the individual Ayurveda basic elements. The body tissue, called dhatus in Ayurveda, is a crucial factor for one’s health. Since all of nature in which we live is made up of these elements and the five elements are omnipresent, they inevitably influence one another and therefore also influence our present constitution (vrikriti)
