› The doshas in Ayurveda

There are three doshas in Ayurveda.

The doshas are bioenergetic conditions that are created by the five Ayurveda elements. The combination of any two elements is capable of giving rise to these bioenergetic conditions, i.e. producing a dosha.

Ayurveda dosha

  1. VATA : The combination of space and air together form the bioenergy known in Ayurveda as vata. Its primary characteristic is movement. Therefore, in Ayurveda, the dosha vata is regarded as the energy that governs processes in the human body which involve movement. These include nerve impulses, the circulation of blood, respiration and excretion.
  2. PITTA : The elements of fire and water together form the Ayurveda bioenergy called pitta. The pitta dosha is important primarily for all digestive and thermoregulation processes in the human body. This applies to the processes in the organs and tissues as well as in the cellular structure.
  3. KAPHA : Finally, the third dosha is made up of the two elements water and earth. In Ayurveda this dosha is called kapha. Kapha is the bioenergy that is primarily responsible for growth and structural increase. In the Ayurveda teachings, kapha also brings about cohesion and protection. Therefore, the dosha kapha is assigned to all tissue and substances in the human body that have a protective function, for example, for organs.

The individuality of Ayurveda doshas - prakriti -

is one of the most fundamental and important principles of Ayurveda. It says that each person is an individual and everyone has their very own unique pattern of the three doshas. These varying ratios of doshas that one has from the time they are born are referred to in Ayurveda as prakriti. And this is also the balance that is aimed for to achieve the ideal state of health.

Vrikriti, the current ratio of the doshas

can differ from prakriti due to certain environmental influences, for example. In the long run, however, this kind of deviation leads to illness and should be rebalanced using different Ayurveda therapies. Massage and an ayurvedic diet are measures which are suitable to help restore this balance.
