› Abhyanga - The ayurvedic full-body oil massage

The term "abhyanga"

encompasses all types of Ayurveda massage that are performed using oil, whether it be a full-body massage or a massage of individual parts of the body. For partial massages of specific regions of the body, the respective term for the body part being treated is added as a prefix.

Ayurveda Abhyanga

Translated, abhyanga means

oleation, which reveals the primary objective of this massage. In abhyanga, herbal oil specifically suited to your constitution type is steadily applied to your body. If this massage is performed as a therapeutic treatment, determining the constitution is essential because the selected oil makes a considerable contribution to the success of the treatment.

› Performing abhyanga

Traditional abhyanga

as a full-body oil massage begins first of all by the targeted pouring of warm oils over the body. After applying the oil, a precisely defined, individually tailored massage follows, paying attention to the most important marma points. The massage pleasantly covers the entire body structure. Traditionally, these Ayurveda massage techniques are performed in seven positions. Lying on the stomach is avoided to prevent unnecessary pressure on the internal organs.

In the wellness sector, the massage is reduced to five positions to ensure greater peace and relaxation.

Both the oils and the massage technique are individually suited to the guest’s constitution.

› Massage techniques in abhyanga

There are two distinct massage techniques in abhyanga:

mardana and samvahana. The two techniques can be combined depending on the desired effect of the abhyanga and the client’s constitution.

· Mardana is the name of the pressure massage, i.e. the elements of abhyanga in which a lot of pressure is applied. It has a mobilising effect and is predominantly indicated for kapha-dominant constitutions and for the preparation of eliminating techniques.

· Samvahana denotes the massage technique which predominantly involves stroking. It has a soothing and balancing effect and is therefore mainly performed for indications which can be attributed to excess vata.

› Uses of abhyanga

Abhyanga is the central therapy in Ayurveda.

It is also referred to as the mother of all massages. It has a detoxifying effect, prevents illnesses, stimulates the circulation, relaxes and improves sleep, strengthens and calms the nervous system and has an invigorating and rejuvenating effect on tissue (dhatus) and skin. It is primarily performed in Ayurveda to reduce excess vata.
